The match

Fresh off a 17-3 win over the Baltimore Ravens, in the divisional round, the Buffalo Bills are raring to go in their first AFC Championship game since 1993. Their opponents will be none other than the reigning AFC and Superbowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. KC were dealt a huge blow when Patrick Mahomes had to be removed from their game last weekend due to a concussion but they held on for a 22-17 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs have starred for the Bills this season but their defence comprehensively shut out the Ravens offence last week and got them the W. They stopped Lemar Jackson from running the ball and shut out one of the best offences the league has to offer to allow zero touchdowns. The Bills pass defence has held QB’s to an 86.9 rating (5th in the league) throughout the season and are tied for 6th in fewest 20+ passes allowed. However, this is Patrick Mahomes we are talking about. The Superbowl MVP was in fine tune before leaving the game last week throwing for 225 yards and putting up a passer rating close to 110. Mahomes’ opposite number Josh Allen has played the season of his life in 2020/21 and between them, they have thrown 79 touchdown passes this year so we should be in store for quite a high-scoring encounter.

Stefon Diggs received a pass a league-high 127 times racking up 1535 yards and scored eight touchdowns making him a key component in the Bills passing game. The wide-receiver scored the only TD against the Ravens and was responsible for 106 of Allen’s 206 passing yards last week.

As for the Chiefs, they have a plethora of talent in the WR position and also boast the best tight-end in pro-football with Travis Kelce. Kelce was on hand for eight receptions last week over 109 yards and scored a touchdown as the Chiefs saw off the Browns. The tight-end has accumulated the most points ever for that position in one season in 2020/21 but the recovery of Clyde Edwards-Helaire could also prove pivotal for KC. The one issue the Bills have had this season has been stopping teams across the ground and although they limited Lemar and company last weekend they have given up 4.6 yards per carry which could be exposed by Edwards-Helaire and Darrell Williams. The latter rushed for 78 yards from just 13 carries against Cleveland in the divisional round.

Key Statistics

  • Kansas City defeated the Bills 26-17 back in October.
  • Bills’ divisional-round win over the Ravens featured just 20 points.
  • Each of the Bills’ two play-off games have witnessed under 54 points scored.

The bet of our experts

This game is littered with offensive talent but as we have seen already in the play-offs tense starts to games have contributed to an average total of points come the end of the match. I’m sure the offence of both teams will pull through however; I don’t see 55 points being scored here so I’m going to tip under 54 in this AFC Championship game.
