Seventh seeded Iga Swiatek takes on the unseeded Kaia Kanepi in the Australian Open quarter finals. The winner will face either 27th seeded Danielle Collins or unseeded Alize Cornet in the last four. Swiatek is the second highest seed left in the tournament and this is the first time the Pole has made it past the fourth round here. World ranked ninth, Swiatek is up to seventh in the live rankings. Winning this quarter final can take her up to a career high equalling fourth. This is the first time that Swiatek has made it to a Grand Slam quarter final outside of the French Open. Swiatek is becoming one of the most consistent players in Grand Slam events and in the last eight has only missed out on reaching the fourth round on one occasion. The Pole is still searching for a second Grand Slam title to follow up the one won at Roland Garros in 2020. Her one warm-up tournament saw Swiatek reach the last four in Adelaide, losing to Ashleigh Barty. Only one set has been lost on the way to this quarter final. That came in the last 16, when having to come from a set down to beat Sonya Cirstea.
Kaia Kanepi is one of three unseeded players left in the tournament. It's still possible (but unlikely) that we could have another women's singles Grand Slam final between two unseeded players. Kanepi began this tournament ranked 115th but is up to 63rd in the live rankings. A shock win over Swiatek would see her up to 41st. This is her first Grand Slam quarter final since the 2017 US Open. Kanepi first played in the Australian Open 20 years ago when Swiatek was yet to celebrate her first birthday. Previously, the Estonian had never made it past the third round of this event. Her big win this year was in the last round when beating second seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets, after losing the first. This is her first meeting with Swiatek and it's the Pole who can get the victory.
