It is a six-pointer on display in Group ‘H’ of the Euro qualification campaign, as Iceland (third, 12 points) play host to France (second, 15 points).
Just three points separate the top three sides, which means there is so much to play for both the teams here. Iceland have lost their previous qualifying fixture 4-2 to Albania, but have won three in a row prior to that. Three of Iceland’s four wins this campaign have come with a clean sheet, which is a clear indicator of their defensive prowess. Iceland are unbeaten in nine Euro qualifiers played at home (W7, D2) including three straight wins this campaign. Two of those have come with a clean sheet, although the winning margin was just one goal in two of the three wins. While Iceland will have one eye on the top-two sides, they will be wary of Albania’s threat who are just three points behind.
France recovered from a 2-0 loss at Turkey on matchday three, with three straight wins. Two of those have come with a clean sheet and in fact, four of the last five results (excluding draws) in the Euros qualifiers there has been a clean sheet on either side. France’s only loss in this qualification campaign has come away from home in Turkey. Barring that, France have scored exactly four goals in their two wins away from home in the Euro qualifying matches.
This is surely going to be an enthralling contest, considering the importance of three points in the fixture. A loss for Iceland will be a serious blow to their hopes, while France will hope for a win that will give them buffer in the qualification campaign. However, Iceland are better placed to pick up points.
