The match

On the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s iconic ‘ I have a dream’ an announcement was made to resume the NBA play-off games this Saturday after a ‘productive’ meeting between teams officials, players and governors regarding social justice and racial equality.

A number of major sporting fixtures in the United States were postponed in the last two days after the NBA players began to boycott the play-off games in protest at the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin last week.

The Houston Rockets have seen their 2-0 play-off lead wiped out in recent days by Oklahoma City Thunder who have rumbled back to level the series at 2-2 heading into game five. Houston and James Harden in particular have missed that supporting act in Russell Westbrook and this Western Conference first-round play-off series is now in the balance as the HP Field House in Orlando hosts game five. The good news for Houston is that they have won without Westbrook twice already in the series but they need to find a way around the OKC defence and sort out their own while they’re at it. Houston came into the play-offs with the third worst defence among the 16 teams battling for the NBA Championship conceding on average 114.8 points per game. Only six of the 87 teams to go 2-0 up in the first round of the play-offs have gone on to lose the series but if Oklahoma continue to expose the Rockets defence, Houston could have a problem. Mike D’Antoni’s team have gone five for five in the bubble whilst winning and losing another game in overtime whilst conceding an average of 113.8 points per game.

Oklahoma have managed to stifle the league’s fourth-highest scoring offence lowering the Rockets’ points per game average to 110.7 over the last three games and have been able to prevail on two occasions during that time. OKC coach Billy Donovan will also be hoping his players can provide at the other end of the court like they did in game four by scoring 117 points. The three-guard line-up consisting of Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Dennis Schroeder and Chris Paul went off in game-four combining for a total of 87 points, 19 rebounds and 12 assists and their influence would go a long way in taking Thunder one step further to round two of the play-offs.

Key Statistics

  • OKC have shot over 110 points in each of the last two games.
  • Houston Rockets have conceded 114.4 points per game on average across the regular season and the play-offs.
  • OKC’S field goal percentage has risen from 44% in game two to 48.4% in game four.

The bet of our experts

Thunder are back in the series and after finding their shooting boots in games two and three they are now primed and ready to land the knockout blow in the series. I’m expecting OKC to score over 110 points in game five and perhaps that will be enough to give them the win.
