A winless USA (fourth, zero points) will look to get points on board when they take on France (third, four points) in this Pool C Rugby World Cup match.
France are coming off a very tight 23-21 win over Argentina to pick their first points of the tournament. It was a nervous result in the end, because Argentina rallied from 20-3 down at half-time to nearly clinch the match. France were brilliant in the opening stages of the game looking comfortable on the pitch. However, they started collapsing alarmingly and only a drop goal by Camille Lopez won them the game. France will know that their showdown against England will go a long way in determining their final positions in the pool. Unfortunately for them, the cyclone threat to Japan casts a shadow on this match, which could be called off.
USA were playing England after a gap of nearly 12 years and were overwhelmed by the English side. Injury to David Ainu’u in the initial stages of the game knocked the wind off their sails. From there on it was one-way traffic as the scoreline kept bulging. USA did manage to pick up a try with one minute to go. They do not have a great record against France, losing each of their last five matches. Furthermore, it is 1-6 win-loss record for USA, who have last defeated the French in 1924. The worry for the USA side is the short turnaround time, with their last match against England coming only six days back.
France will have one eye on the weather, which threatens to blow this game away. With no reserve day for the pool games, both sides will have to settle for two points each. Regardless, France remain in good shape and form to brush aside the Americans.
