France and Denmark face off for the third time in the past six months when the two sides meet for the second matchday of Group D in the FIFA World Cup. The French looked brilliant in their opening match against Australia, recovering from conceding an early goal to storm to a 4-1 victory. The win puts them in an excellent position to advance from the group and Les Bleus can secure qualification to the knockout stages with a win against their Danish opponents today. Denmark kicked off their World Cup campaign with a disappointing performance in a 0-0 draw to Tunisia. While certainly not the end of the world, the result makes things more complicated for the Danish Dynamite as they enter their toughest group fixture against a familiar foe.
France and Denmark were drawn together in the Nations League Group 1 and it was the Danes who got the better of the French in that tournament. Denmark earned an excellent 2-1 victory in Paris against France in June and followed that up with another fantastic display in a 2-0 home victory over the French only two months ago. They’ve certainly proven to be France’s bogey team lately but Les Bleus will be confident ahead of this fixture given their performance in the opening match. Denmark will have to improve as they were nullified by the Tunisians for large periods of the match on Tuesday. Aside from one unbelievable miss from Andreas Cornelius right in front of goal, the Danes failed to create another clear cut scoring chance. Manager Kasper Hjulmand will be hoping the performance was just a blip as Denmark have largely been a very consistent attacking side under the 50-year-old’s leadership, scoring in 29 of his 35 matches in charge.
We’re going to back Denmark on the double chance as our bet for this match. This Denmark team has grown into a very close unit over the last few years with the adversity that they have faced. We expect them to come through with a much improved performance here with their backs against the wall and needing a positive result. The big win against Australia means that France likely wouldn’t mind just a point in this match which could work into the Danes favor. With how well Denmark have played France recently and the way the group is poised, backing Denmark to avoid defeat is the way to go in this one.
