The season hasn’t turned out great for Fortaleza so far; they are struggling both in the Brazilian Serie A and the Copa Sudamericana. The Brazilians will be at home to take on Argentine side River Plate in the fourth round of matches in the Copa Libertadores. Going into this game, Fortaleza are third in Group F with three points while River Plate lead with nine points. Fortaleza lost 2-0 to River Plate on Match Day 2 and as they plot for a home win, they will want to improve on the performance against Corinthians in their last game, which left them stuck at the bottom on the Serie A. Their only win so far in this group has been against the bottom side, Allianza Lima. That is also their only win in the six competitive matches they’ve played this season. Fortaleza have lost the remaining five and have no clean sheet.
River Plate are coming from a 7-0 win over Sarmiento in the Argentine league. They are in much better shape, unbeaten in the last three matches and just one loss in the last nine matches. It also helps with their match fitness that they’ve played more games than Fortaleza this season. Apart from the three in this group, River Plate have already played 13 league games so they will be more match-fit. Going into this game, River Plate have one clean sheet only in the last five matches, and maybe this presents an opportunity for Fortaleza. They have however won all their Group F matches so far, keeping two clean sheets in the three games.
River Plate have a good run going into this game and they face a side that is struggling both domestically and on the continental front. River Plate need a point here to secure their place in the next round but we will be backing them to win this, in light of the two sides’ recent forms.
