For the second successive season, Feyenoord and Roma will face off in Europe with the former set to host the first leg of the two teams’ Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday. Feyenoord and Roma met for the third time in history in Europe in the final of the Europa Conference League last season with the Italian giants ending up 1-0 victors. Feyenoord will seek to secure their first win in this matchup this time around having avoided defeat once with the 1-1 draw in the Europa League back in 2015. The Dutch side come to this match in superb form which has seen them win 18 of their last 24 matches across all competitions. They beat RKC Waalwijk 5-1 over the weekend to inch closer to this season’s Eredivisie title with six matches left to play. With an eight-point cushion in the league, Arne Slot’s men can juggle their domestic and continental targets without one interfering with the other. They beat Shakhtar Donetsk 7-1 at home for an 8-2 aggregate victory to book this round and will hope for an emphatic win here to make the second leg just a formality.
Roma’s only chance at silverware this season lies in the Europa League as they are already out of domestic cup competitions and are also just two matches away from being ruled out mathematically for the league title. Jose Mourinho, a two-time champion of this tournament as coach, will seek to lead the Rome club to a second successive European triumph just like he did with the Conference League. After going three matches without a win (two losses and a draw), Roma have picked right in time for this visit to the Netherlands and come to this match having won their last two matches without conceding a goal. This defensive solidity should come in handy in trying to stifle a rampant Feyenoord side. The Giallorossi haven’t been impressive at all this season on their travels, especially recently where they have won just one of their last seven away matches with a further four ending in defeat. If they cannot master a win, they will hope to contain Feyenoord so as to have a chance when the tie shifts to Italy.
Feyenoord don’t have the head-to-head advantage against Roma but they do have the better form coming into this match. Their home form in particular has us convinced that Feyenoord v Roma will end in a win for Feyenoord.
