Fenerbahce host Umraniyespor for the opening round of the Turkish Super Lig. After missing out by eight points on last year’s title, the Istanbul outfit surely aim to do better this time around, and the appointment of high flying and experienced coach Jorge Jesus makes those ambitions crystal clear. Despite making a surprise exit from the UCL qualifiers early on, they easily dispatched Slovacko for the Europa League qualifiers and all but secured their participation in the competition’s play off rounds. The hosts should also be buoyed by their recent form, having won six of their last nine games and boasting an impressive unbeaten streak of twenty- two games in normal time, last losing in February. The Yellow Canaries are also impressive on home soil, being unbeaten in sixteen and emerging as winners in twelve of those. The two teams also met in 2019 for the Turkish Cup, where Umraniyespor surprisingly did the double over Fenerbahce, winning both games 1-0.
Umraniyespor capped off an impressive season in the second division in second place finishing level on points with Ankaragucu, and earned their promotion to the Turkish top tier. Despite being rated as the favourites to wave an early goodbye to the division, they performed admirably in their friendlies, winning four of the five they played, including clean sheet victories against fellow Super Lig sides Hatayspor and Giresunspor. They have also been efficient away from home, where they have won four of their last five, keeping clean sheets in three of those.
