In their first-ever UEFA encounter against Italian opponents, La Liga side Getafe will look to surprise Serie A giants Inter Milan, as the single-leg UEFA round of 16 will kick off in Gelsenkirchen.
Inter finished second to Juventus in Serie A, after Antonio Conte successfully rebuilt the side this season. The Italians come into this game on the back of an eight-match unbeaten competitive run, winning five and drawing three. Furthermore, Inter have kept five clean sheets in their last six matches, which should boost their confidence ahead of this crucial tie. Specifically in the Europa League, Inter defeated Ludogorets (2-0 away and 2-1 home). This came, after dropping into the Europa League, following a third-place finish in Group ‘F’ behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. This is the fourth time Inter are in the round of 16 but have lost all three of their previous ties.
Getafe finished second behind Group C winners Basel to qualify for only their second-ever knockout phase of a European competition. The minnows finished eighth in La Liga this season after a poor run of form post-lockdown. Getafe have won only once in their last 12 competitive matches, drawing six, but losing five. Worryingly enough, Getafe have failed to score in five of their last six matches although drawing two of those. Playing away from home, Getafe have failed to win in their last six competitive road trips and have failed to score on their last four away matches. However, their Europa League away record is slightly better even if patchy, with two wins and two losses in the competition this season.
Inter do not have an inspiring record on travels to Germany, winning five, drawing eight and losing seven of their 20 UEFA competition matches. Specifically, they have won just once in their last eight visits to this country, losing four and drawing three. However, recent form puts Inter in a strong position to qualify. Getafe couldn’t finish their season stronger and have gone winless in six league matches. With no goals in five of those six and in their last four away matches, Getafe present a dire picture ahead of this big showdown. We are backing Inter to do the job and if you are a risk-taker, back them to win with a clean sheet.
