The third qualifying round of the Europa Conference League sees Brondby heading to Switzerland to take on Basel for the return leg. The Danish club managed a slight 1-0 win at home in the first leg but come into this match as underdogs against the Swiss giants. Both clubs have endured difficult starts to their new domestic seasons and are each sitting close to the bottom of their respective league seasons. Basel have only managed to draw the first three matches of the Swiss Super League season and now have only one win in their last six matches across all competitions. It’s been a rough start for manager Alex Frei in his first year at his boyhood club as Basel seek their first league title since the 2016/17 campaign. On the other side, Brondby are trying to build off a fourth-place league finish last year but have dug themselves into an early hole with a 1-0-3 start in the Superliga. They’ve fared slightly better in Europe however, and a 3-1-3 in all competitions so far.
Given the 1-0 aggregate lead for the visitors, Brondby should be looking to tighten things up in the return leg coming in as the underdogs. They could fancy their chances to keep a clean sheet here given the hosts’ struggles to put the ball in the back of the net so far. The RotBlau have now been shutout in their last two matches and have only managed to score five goals in six total matches this season. Basel will be hoping they can carry over their rather impressive defensive form from last season to help see them over the line here. The hosts had the best defensive record in the Super League last season and only conceded 20 goals in 18 home matches. With the way this tie looks finely balanced, a low-scoring encounter is likely to be on the cards here.
