The penultimate fixture of round 28 of the Italian Serie A will take place on Monday at the Carlo Castellani Stadium where Empoli will play host to Lecce. Only one point separates the two teams heading into this match with Empoli sitting in 14th place with 28 points while Lecce are 15th with 27 points. Empoli have struggled all season but their form has taken a worse turn in 2023 as they have struggled to win matches, ending up victorious just twice out of the 12 matches they have played this year. In recent weeks especially they have really struggled and come to this match without a win in their last eight matches and have lost four straight. This has seen Paolo Zanetti’s men drop down to just nine points above the relegation zone and this isn’t a place they want to be, heading into the final 10 matches of the season.
Lecce are also on the same woeful run and come to this weekend’s encounter also having lost their last four matches. Marco Beroni’s men however have won more matches (3) than Empoli this year but they have also suffered more losses, enduring defeat six times out of the 12 times they have taken to the pitch. Though eight points above the drop zone, they are still not safe and if this dip in form isn’t dealt with they can find themselves going back down to the second tier just one season after being promoted.
These two teams have played to a combined 19 draws this season, meaning they have targeted a share of the spoils more often than they have done for a win and that is why we predict that Empoli v Lecce will be a draw.
