The second-round qualifiers of the Champions League are here and Ukraine’s Dynamo Kiev will be up against Partizan in the first leg. Hosts Dynamo Kiev will be hoping for a winning start as they play their first game of the season. In this article we look at the stats ahead of the match then offer a prediction.
A solid preseason for Dynamo Kiev ended in defeat as they fell 3-2 to Union Berlin. They finished second in their league last season, which was enough to guarantee them this slot. A 5-0 aggregate defeat to Benfica in 2022 was their last act in the Champions League.
The Ukrainians, however, have relative experience on the European front. They reached the round of 16 of the Champions League in the 2015/16 season. In their last nine Champions League matches though, they registered just two wins.
While Dynamo Kiev have been here more recently, Partizan are marking their return after seven years out. In their final three Champions League matches, in 2017, Partizan failed to register a win. After opening their campaign with a 1-0 win away to Napredak, they’ll have something to build on here.
A stoppage time goal from Matheus Saldanha lifted Partizan to this win over their 10-man hosts. Having failed to reach the group stage of the Champions League since 2010/11, Partizan will look to change the narrative this time. They have welcomed back Aleksandar Stanojevic, who will be keen on starting his return with a win.
This match will mark the third meeting between the sides. In the first two, both Europa League games in 2017, Dynamo Kiev won home and away.
As both sides are just getting started for the season, we expect a tight affair here. Home advantage should, however, work for Dynamo Kiev. They also have the head-to-head advantage and have been at this stage more recently than Partizan. That and their good run at home should boost their confidence. The visitors haven't been on a very good away run, and though the season is just starting, that could be a factor here. Our prediction for Dynamo Kiev v Partizan is for Dynamo Kiev to win.
