The match

There won’t be any shortage of entertainment when world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia will take on the third-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals of the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals. Djokovic is looking to tie Roger Federer’s record of six ATP Finals titles, while Thiem is looking for his first career ATP Finals’ title after picking up his maiden Grand Slam title earlier this year at the US Open.

Thiem started the ATP Finals campaign with a three-set win over defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas getting over the line with a 7-6 4-6 6-3 scoreline. He followed it up with an equally intense and impressive 7-6 7-6 win over Rafael Nadal. However, Thiem lowered his guard after ensuring his qualification to the semis and lost in straight sets to Andrey Rublev 6-2 7-5 in his last and final group phase match. That said, Thiem still looks top of his game and high on confidence to continue his winning streak.

Djokovic started the tournament with a 6-3 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman but had to endure a 6-3 6-3 loss to Daniil Medvedev in the second match. Although Medvedev is in the best form of his life, Djokovic’s loss was an indicator that his game isn’t top notch in the tournament. The Serb had to win his final group game and did so with a 6-3 7-6 win over Alexander Zverev. Djokovic has a 41-4 win-loss record in the season and has four titles, but his form has been going downhill in the recent matches.

Key Statistics

  • The last three matches between Djokovic and Thiem have gone the distance – deciding set.
  • Djokovic leads Thiem 7-4 in 11 career head-to-head meetings, but has lost three of his last seven matches.
  • Both Djokovic and Thiem bring a 2-1 win-loss record from the group phase.

The bet of our experts

Recent history suggests that Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem will dish out another thriller – their last three matches have been entertaining and very close. Djokovic has lost three of his last seven matches and his form isn’t not up to his usual standards. Thiem, on the other hand, is the man to beat even though he lost to Rublev in the last group game. Our pick, though, is in the sets market and are backing this to see three sets.
