The match

After a devastating game two defeat things looked bleak for a heartbroken Denver Nuggets team but they have showed tremendous desire throughout the play-offs and managed to dig deep once again to claim game three of this series and now have a chance to level proceedings with the LA Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. Denver responded brilliantly and led the Lakers early before taking a 10-point lead into half-time. Despite a Lebron James-inspired comeback ftom the Lakers in the final quarter Denver held out to get on the board in the series. The Nuggets held a 20-point lead during the final quarter which is the biggest advantage any franchise has held over the Lakers so far during the post-season. A career-high total of 26 points for Jeremy Grant during a play-off game helped Denver on their way to victory alongside the clutch Jamal Murray who has often carried this Nuggets side during their play-off run. Murray stepped up once again with 10 of his 28 points coming in the fourth and he also contributed with 11 assists. Denver have given themselves a chance in these finals and are just one win away from evening the series when many were predicting a 4-0 whitewash as they went 0-2 but no team has ever overturned multiple 3-1 deficits in a single post-season.

The Lakers came to life very late on but very nearly emerged victorious for what would have been quite an undeserving win. Denver simply wanted the game more as they were a lot more aggressive and showed tremendous hunger in game three as epitomised by their 44-25 victory in rebounds. The 4th quarter comeback for LA was not enough as many of their top stars were rocked by the tenacity of the Nuggets with Anthony Davies, JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard combined to score just four rebounds. Nikola Jokic harassed AD all game and forced the Laker to shoot from beyond the arch and alongside Rajon Rondo and Alex Caruso, the three went 0-11 when shooting for three points. The Lakers have been guilty if being complacent throughout this series with the label of favourites perhaps going to their heads but they must be careful if they are to avoid the same fate suffered by city rivals; Clippers. However, I am expecting a response from the Lakers spearheade by former MVP LeBron James who became the first player to score multiple 30 point doubles for the Lakers in the same post-season.

Key Statistics

  • Two of three games so far in this series have seen over 214.5 points scored.
  • Four of five meetings between these teams and three of four inside the bubble have featured 215 points or more.
  • The LA Lakers games so far in the play-offs have averaged 219 points per game.

The bet of our experts

That win for the Nuggets in game three has set us up for a really fascinating series. Denver have already toppled the Clippers and they most definitely have what it takes to down the Lakers. I am expecting LA to come out strong for this one though which leaves the result in the balance but I am confident in tipping over 214.5 points to be scored in this game.
