The match

David Beckham's new club had a difficult game to start their inaugural campaign in the MLS and ultimately came up short in their maiden voyage against LAFC 1-0. Seven of the 13 sides in the Eastern Conference were beaten on the opening matchday including the hosts for this game DC United who were beaten at home by Colorado Rapids. Now a chance for both teams to pick up their first points of the campaign.

The hosts finished 5th in this division last season but now without the talismanic Wayne Rooney it’s a new chapter for the franchise. DC United will face the expansion side of Inter Miami who were undone by a piece of magic from Carlos Vela in a narrow week 1 defeat and now DC will be looking to inflict further misery. The capital club were 1-0 ahead last week and looked to be heading for all three points but two late goals sentenced them to defeat. DC won seven of their 17 home games last season but looked out of sorts last weekend at home to Colorado Rapids. Although, I wouldn’t be confident in a DC win I do fancy them to at least score as they have done in 12 of their last 13 games at Audi Field.

Miami were impressive for large parts of their debut match and I feel against weaker opposition they would have come away with a win. They battled well and were unlucky not to score as their seven shots on target suggested. Five of the six new franchises during the last five MLS seasons have fared well in their second game. Four clubs have won, with one drawing and only one losing their second game. Minnesota the only franchise of recent years to taste defeat in their second match day when they were beaten 6-1 by fellow newcomers Atlanta United 6-1 back in 2017. In four of those six games the rookies were playing away from home, with the new franchise scoring in each.

Key Statistics

  • Inter Miami had more shots on target than 23 of the other 24 sides involved last week, only LAFC and Colorado Rapids had more.
  • DC United averaged 1.47 goals per game at home last season.
  • DC United have won three of their five inaugural meetings with the league’s newest franchises (New York City (L), Orlando City (W), Atlanta United (W), Minnesota (L), FC Cincinnati (W)) since 2015 but are without a clean sheet in any of those games.

The bet of our experts

Diego Alonso will have been impressed by his sides endeavour last week against LAFC and with DC losing last week also he will feel his side can come here and cause an upset. I expect them to at least get on the scoresheet as they very nearly did in their opening game so back both teams to score here.
