The match

Two of the most in-form players in the men’s circuit will play for the title of the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals in London on Sunday. Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev are the flagbearers of the next generation and will look to end the season on a high. Thiem needed an epic three-setter in the semis to overcome world no. 1 Novak Djokovic. Medvedev came back from the brink to get past Spaniard powerhouse Rafael Nadal in the semis.

Thiem had a 2-1 record coming into the semis after wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal were offset by a loss to Andrey Rublev in an inconsequential group finale. In fact, Thiem was already the group winner of ‘Group London’ even before the final match started, which could explain why his intensity dropped. However, there was none of it on show against Djokvoic in the semis. The match lasted almost three hours and Thiem wasted five match points before outlasting Djokovic 7-5 6-7 7-6. The Austrian is in the form of his life and has shown excellent power and court coverage in this tournament.

Medvedev is the only unbeaten player left in the tournament and has in fact won his last nine matches. He came through straight set wins against Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic to book his place as ‘Group Tokyo’ winner. Medvedev didn’t let the intensity drop in his last group match against Schwartzman winning in straight sets once again. In the semis against Nadal, though, he needed three sets to eventually win 3-6 7-6 6-3. In fact, the Russian was down 3-6 4-5 with Nadal serving for the match but he broke back to give himself a new lease of life. From there on, there was no turning back as he showed the strength of his new-found first serve efficiency.

Key Statistics

  • Thiem leads the head-to-head against Medvedev 3-1.
  • Thiem has won two titles this year and has a 25-8 record on the tour.
  • Medvedev is on a nine-match winning streak including four wins in this tournament.

The bet of our experts

Forget a match-up between Djokovic and Nadal, this is a dream finale as Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev are the hottest players on circuit on current form. This match should see the best of both players and go the distance. Although Medvedev is on an unbeaten run coming into this fixture, we believe it is Thiem who has the class to go all the way. Back Thiem to win this match.
