Two iconic former skippers in the Premier League will come face to face as managers this weekend. Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace will host Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on Match Day 13. Going into the game, Palace are placed 10th on 16 points and Villa 15th with 13 points. Crystal Palace’s major handicap this season has been a failure to hold on leads. Their last game, against Burnley was another example; after leading 3-2 at the break they dropped two points with the game ending 3-3. While they are unbeaten in their last seven matches, only two of them are wins. In their last 10 matches, Palace only failed to score once – against Liverpool. They have scored two or more goals in seven of their last 10 matches. While five goals were scored in the first half in Palace’s last game, most of their matches came alive in the second half. In their last five matches, nine out of 16 goals have been scored in the second half. The hosts haven’t lost a league game at home this season; they’ve played six, won two and drawn four.
Aston Villa gave Steven Gerrard the perfect welcome with a 2-0 win at home to Brighton. Villa haven’t had a good season and even in that game, they struggled to open up Brighton, with the goals coming in the final six minutes. They will go to this game still without Ezri Konsa who was sent off against West Ham United. With just one win, and five losses in their last six matches, Villa will need to up their game to match this tough Crystal Palace side. Going into this game Villa have been pretty consistent in attack, only failing to score in two of their last 10 matches, and will be looking to tap into Palace’s leaky defence. However, their own defence has been porous, with just three clean sheets in the last 10 matches. In four of their last six matches, they’ve conceded two or more goals. A total of 17 goals have been scored in Villa’s last five matches, 11 of those have been second half goals.
Matches pitting these two sides have lately been consistent with high scores, we expect the same going to this game. Most of the goals in the run up to this game have come in the second half and we will back the same here.
