Croatia and Wales kick off their Euro 2024 Group D qualifying campaigns when the two nations clash at the Stadion Poljud in the city of Split. The last seven years have been unquestionably the most successful in Croatia’s history. The team has continuously over-performed on the world stage and will be targeting a deep run at the Euros next year. They take to the field now for the first time since defeating Morocco 2-1 in the third-place match in Qatar. Croatia’s recent results have been impressive, racking up nine wins, three draws and two defeats dating back to the start of the 2022-24 Nations League competition. Croatia did not disappoint in that competition either, topping a group composed of France, Denmark and Austria to earn a spot in the playoff with a record of four wins, one draw and one defeat.
Wales enters its qualification group with aspirations of securing the second qualifying spot in Group D with Turkey, Armenia and Latvia the remaining participants. The Dragons kick things off with the most difficult match of the group in a spot where the oddsmakers have them as significant underdogs. Wales had a disappointing 2022 World Cup which saw it finish at the bottom of the group, earning only one point in its three matches. The team ranked 28th in the world according to FIFA will now attempt to put an end to a lengthy winless run but will more than likely have to wait until they face Latvia at home three days later. Wales has currently failed to pick up a win in its last eight consecutive matches, suffering defeat in six of those outings. They take to the field here for the first time in the calendar year and the first time since the World Cup in Qatar.
With the retirement of Gareth Bale and with Aaron Ramsey getting up there in years, there is now a distinct lack of quality in this Welsh team. Meanwhile, Croatia have a number of talented young players breaking into the team such as Gvardiol and are still able to call upon experienced veterans like Modric and Perisic. You can certainly go for Croatia to win on the standard three way line but we’re going to aim for a bigger price and target a multiple-goal victory for the home side. Our Croatia vs Wales prediction: Croatia -1 European handicap
