The match

A confidence boosting victory is all that Colombia are targeting when they take on Panama in an international friendly before the start of Copa America. Colombia will be one of the dark horses for the Copa America tournament in June, which is the biggest competition in South America. A third-placed finish three years ago was not exactly up to their standards, considering some of the big names they boast. The presence of Carlos Quieroz at the helm bodes well for ‘Los Cafeteros’, considering his success with both Iran and Portugal during his managerial stints. James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao, Juan Cuadrado and Duvan Zapata have all got call-ups and should make it a very aggressive final XI. Panama had the biggest success in their history when they featured in the World Cup in Russia last summer. However, they had very little success there, losing all the three group phase matches. With top stars Luis Tejada and Blas Perez retiring after the World Cup, Panama are going through a generational shift. They remain winless in their last 12 matches, losing nine of those. With a defence that has leaked at least two goals in eight of their last ten games in all competitions, they will be under pressure against the star-studded forward line-up of Colombia.

Key Statistics

  • It’s been 12 years since these two sides last met, when Colombia won 4-0.
  • There have been at least three goals scored in five of the six H2H meetings.
  • Colombia have won four of the last six H2H meetings.
  • Panama have lost nine of their last 12 matches.

The bet of our experts

Colombia have a great line-up at their disposal, considering the success story of Zapata this season, to go with Rodriguez and Falcao. They should fancy their chances of scoring past the struggling defence of Panama. Colombia’s win looks a foregone conclusion, but they need to be wary of taking the visitors too lightly. They have won three of their last four friendlies and should fancy their chances of scoring enough goals for a win here.
