Real Madrid are confirmed of their progression to the Champions League knockouts as runners-up of Group ‘A’, but FC Brugge are in contention for finishing third. The hosts are third with three points, while Madrid are second with eight points.
Brugge will finish third if they beat Madrid, or if Galatasaray fail to win against Paris Saint-Germain. The hosts have been having an indifferent season in the Champions League this campaign. They started with a 0-0 draw at home against Galatasaray and then held Madrid to a 2-2 draw away from home. Brugge then fell to consecutive losses to PSG – a 5-0 loss at home and a 1-0 away loss. Their last league game ended in a last-gasp draw with a 1-1 draw. Despite scoring that goal, Brugge have been notorious for firing blanks in their Champions League matches. The Belgians have failed to score in three of their five group games this campaign and in five of their last seven group matches.
Madrid recovered from a poor start to this campaign where they picked up just one point across two matches. The Spanish giants then went on to win two games in a row, but the 2-2 draw at home to PSG confirmed their second place. Madrid have lost three of their last eight Champions League matches. In each of those losses, they have conceded three or more goals and a total of 15 goals during that eight-gam sequence. However, their away form has been impressive with Madrid winning 15 of their last 24, losing just five. Regardless, Madrid have lost six of their last eight trips to Belgium winning just one.
Real Madrid are already through to the next round of knockouts with their second-place confirmed. Club Brugge on the other hand have a lot riding on the result of this match. Although Galatasaray are not expected to defeat PSG in the other finale of the round, Brugge wouldn’t want to leave things late. Expect the hosts to put in a spirited display and might even pick up a point.
