This contest pits two sides performing considerably lower than their expectations as a labouring Wolves side who are currently 14th travel to Stamford Bridge to take on a Chelsea team in 9th, five points off qualifying for the Champions League.
Chelsea made the decision to sack manager Frank Lampard on Monday. They have lost two of their last three league games with a 2-0 defeat to Leicester last Tuesday stopping any momentum that may have been kick-started with a win at Fulham. Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Fulham is the side’s only victory across their last five league games but a 3-1 win in the FA Cup over Luton at the weekend may have provided the team with a much-needed boost. Chelsea are 9th in the table after 19 games but with sides around them holding games in hand they could find themselves 10th and could end up further off the top-four so a win in this one is paramount. Chelsea did step up to beat Wolves 2-0 on the final day of last season as they secured a 4th place finish and knocked Wolves out of the European places altogether.
Wolves are struggling if truth be told. The absence of Raul Jiminez has hindered their progression and their current position of 14th is an accurate representation of their inconsistent form. Nuno Espirito’s side have been beaten in three of their last four Premier League games and they struggled to a 1-0 victory against sixth-tier Chorley in the FA Cup at the weekend. The visitors bolstered their attack with the signing of striker Willian Jose to hopefully fill the void left by Jiminez and the striker could play a part in turning Wolves’ season around. Wolves have lost five of their nine games on the road and have taken just ten points from a possible 27 away from home. Their last win on the road was away at Arsenal where they won 2-1 but that was the last time Raul Jiminez featured.
