Brighton travel to the Valley to take on Charlton for the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday as the Premier League side returns to competitive action. This will be Brighton’s first match since November 13th when they lost 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League. The Seagulls actually would face off against Villa again for a friendly match almost two weeks ago as both clubs looked to gain some match fitness. That match would end 2-2 with both teams playing a number of first team players. Brighton have been having an excellent season despite losing influential manager Graham Potter earlier in the season. The side has responded well under the leadership of manager Roberto De Zerbi and have shown signs that they can continue the high standard set by Potter before he departed to take over the Chelsea job. Brighton sit seventh in the league table with six wins, three draws and five defeats
They’ll fancy their chances of advancing to the next round of the tournament when they meet a Charlton side sitting 18th in the League One. Charlton have won just five of their 21 matches in the third tier of English football and have been on a torrid run of form as of late. The Addicks have now failed to record a win in their last seven matches, with five of those ending in defeat. Their last result was a 2-1 home loss to Bristol Rovers on Saturday and will be looking to end a streak of two straight losses on home turf. Brighton will have five days of rest in between this fixture and their return to Premier League football against Southampton. Therefore, we believe there is a fairly decent chance that we see a majority of the Seagulls first choice 11 take the field here. With how well they have played since De Zerbi has taken charge, it’s hard to see past anything other than a convincing away win.
Brighton have been on a roll lately and will likely be eager to get off to a winning start in their return to competitive football after the lengthy World Cup break. They’ve looked an excellent attacking side with manager Roberto De Zerbi at the helm and they should have little trouble disposing of a Charlton side that haven’t recorded a victory in over a month. Our bet for the Charlton vs Brighton EFL Cup match is for Brighton to win and cover the -1 three-way handicap.
