Cameron Norrie is the ninth seed in the men's singles. He is in the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time and takes on Tommy Paul (seeded 30th) for a place in the last eight. The winner of this match takes on either unseeded David Goffin or the number 23 seed Frances Tiafoe. Norrie may be in unchartered territory but he must have his eyes on getting to a semi-final, possibly against defending champion Novak Djokovic. Norrie has climbed up the rankings to 12th but was 10th three months ago. He's achieved that despite not having a great record in Grand Slam events and this is his first time past the third round in such an event, let alone just Wimbledon. Norrie has won two tournaments this year with success in Delray Beach and Lyon. He beat Paul on his way to the Delray Beach title and leads his opponent 2-1 in previous meetings. Actually, beating Paul might be a good omen for Norrie. He also beat the American on his way to winning the Indian Wells tournament last year. So far at Wimbledon, he's had wins over Pablo Andujar, Jaume Munar (winning in five after being 2-1 down) and Steve Johnson.
Tommy Paul had seen two previous attempts to qualify for Wimbledon fail. This is the first time that he's played in the main draw and like Norrie, it's his first ever appearance in the last 16 of a Grand Slam. Paul is ranked 32nd despite before this week having only got to the third round of a Grand Slam once in his career. The American did have a decent warm-up for Wimbledon with quarter finals at Queen's Club and Eastbourne with wins over Denis Shapovalov and Jannik Sinner. He's carried that form into this main draw and has beaten Fernando Verdasco, Adrian Mannarino and Jiri Vesely with no sets dropped and only 14 games lost in the last two rounds. This is a big step up though and it's Norrie who can get the win.
