Athletico Paranaense will look to make it two wins in two in the Brazilian Serie A, as Goiás will play their first match after seeing their matchday one fixture get rescheduled. Athletico started their Serie A season with a 2-0 win over Fortaleza with both goals scored before half-time. Goiás were scheduled to start their season against Sao Paulo, but the match was postponed due to COVID-19 scare.
Athletico’s opening matchday win extended their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions, winning five and drawing two. Crucially for Athletico, including their latest match, they have kept a clean sheet in four of their last six competitive games. The record remains even more formidable in Serie A, with Athletico unbeaten in 14 league matches – winning nine and drawing five. Low scoring remains a theme, though, as Athletico’s last 11 Serie A matches have seen under 2.5 goals. At home, Athletico have kept five clean sheets in a row winning four and drawing one of those matches.
Goiás warmed up with a friendly loss, but even otherwise their Serie A record from last season has been underwhelming. Goiás have won only three of their last eight league matches, drawing one and losing four of the remaining fixtures. Interestingly, Goiás’ matches have been full of entertainment with their last six Serie A matches producing goals at both ends. Additionally, ten of their last 13 league matches have done the same, although their visitors have been doing otherwise. Worryingly enough, Goiás have struggled on the road winning just one of their last seven Serie A matches, losing four and drawing two.
Athletico Paranaense have an excellent home record against Goiás in Serie A, winning 11 and drawing two of the 15 head-to-heads at home. They haven’t lost at home to Goiás since 2007, winning the last seven Serie A matches at this venue. Goiás might struggle to overturn that record, based on the current form of Athletico. We are backing the hosts to continue their winning start to the season.
