Premier League side Brighton host Championship outfit Swansea in midweek when the two teams for a League Cup third-round clash. The home side are flying high in the top flight five games into the new campaign, sitting fourth with four wins to their name. While few people tipped the Seagulls to scale such heights early in the campaign, their expected goals stats last season suggested that they had the potential to climb much higher than their eventual 16th-place finish. Swansea have not flown as well as their bird-nick-named brethren, flapping in the season's opening weeks. They sit 21st in the Championship table after picking up just seven points in eight games. Brighton have already beaten a Welsh team in this year's competition, dumping Cardiff City out in the second round with a clinical 2-0 win. They have never won the League Cup and made it to the fourth round of the 20/21 tournament. Famously, Swansea won the Cup in 2013, with a team that featured Spanish forward Michu. Last season, however, they exited in the first round.
Brighton have had the best of recent meetings with Swansea, and they are presently on a two-game win streak against the visitors. Meetings between the sides are traditionally low-scoring, four of the last six featuring fewer than three goals. Five of those six saw only one team score. On that note, Brighton have kept three clean sheets in their last five matches, and Swansea failed to score in two of their past three fixtures. We suggest backing the home side to win 2-0.
