The match

Manchester City had a field day against Newcastle United on Wednesday night as they won 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium to open up their lead at second to nine points. They now travel to 15th placed Brighton who fell 3-1 at home to champions Liverpool in their last league match. A win against Brighton will confirm Pep Guardiola's team as the league's runners up, provided third-placed Chelsea gets anything short of a victory in their  trip to Sheffield United earlier on Saturday.

Against Newcastle, the Citizens completed 93.7% of their passes, the highest passing accuracy in recorded history, and after Riyad Mahrez scored his tenth goal of the season. He became the ffith City player to have scored ten or more goals this season. Manchester City have also scored the most number of Premier League goals this season, 86, which is 11 more than Liverpool's total tally. Some 36  goals have been scored in City's away matches placing them and Chelsea as joint top-scorers in this sequence.

The Sky Blues visit Brighton hoping to overcome an away spell that has seen them lose four of their last five away league matches including defeats in their last three consecutive games on the road. The team has also failed to score in three of their last five league matches on the road, the only three times this season that City has left away matches without goals.

Hosts Brighton have 36 points, nine more than the closest relegation duo of Aston Villa and Bournemouth, both with 27 points but each with a match in a hand at the time of publishing this preview. For their safety, it is important that the Seagulls commit to winning their next two matches as they seek to avoid the butterfly moments from the end of the last season when they closed the league calendar just outside the relegation zone at 17th. However, as it stands, the team looks set for a 15th place finish having occupied the position 15 times this season, including the last 12 consecutive rounds.

Brighton got off to a terrible start against Liverpool on Wednesday going 2-0 down in eight minutes. To their credit, the final score was only 3-1. Now they face another top team and will need to work some real magic for a victory against a City team that has beaten them in the last five head to head matches. City scored four unanswered goals in the reverse fixture, which was preceded by a 4-1 victory at the Falmer Stadium in the second round match of the previous season.

Key Statistics

  • City have beaten Brighton in their last five league matches.
  • Brighton have lost three of their last four league matches.
  • City have won seven of nine league matches against the bottom six teams.
  • City have scored four goals in each of their last league two matches against Brighton.

The bet of our experts

Although Manchester City have lost their last three away matches, their performance against Newcastle proved that they are bound to end the season on a high note. It helps their mission that their next opponents are Brighton, a team that they are used to beating. Brighton are still likely to stay in the Premier League but unlikely to win this match. We see City emerging victorious by scoring two or more goals, and being ahead at both half and full time.
