Another edition of Der Klassiker is set to kick off on Saturday with Bayern Munich looking to extend their dominance over rivals Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park. The Bavarian giants were able to get back to winning ways after a series of disappointing league results resulted in Bayern going four consecutive Bundesliga matches without a win. The defending champions smashed Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 before another outpouring of goals would see them defeat Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in the Champions League. Bayern’s 4-3-1 league record sees them even with their opponents today on 15 points and can go top of the Bundesliga if other results go their way. Standing in their way is a Dortmund side hoping to carry over the form which saw them storm to a comprehensive 4-1 away win over Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday. It’s been an inconsistent run of results recently for BVB who have recorded three wins and three losses over their past six matches.
While Bayern Munich’s 9-0 aggregate victory over their last two matches could point to a return to form for Julian Nagelsmann side, Borussia Dortmund will feel that their opponents have never been more vulnerable. Bayern’s recent four match winless run in the Bundesliga was the first time that has occurred in over 20 years. Additionally, Dortmund has improved defensively under Terzic this season, with their performance against Manchester City particularly standing out as impressive. They limited the Citizens to without a shot on goal until their first goal arrived in the 80th minute. They will need a similarly stout defensive showing here against the high-powered Bavarian side but a result for the home team is not out of the question, even in spite of Dortmund’s current eight match losing streak to Bayern.
We’re going to back Borussia Dortmund on the double chance to snap the losing streak against Bayern on home soil as our bet for this one. It can certainly be daunting betting against Bayern but these odds are simply too high given the circumstance. This will also likely be an excellent public fade with the majority of the tickets surely coming in on a Bayern win, especially after putting up nine goals in their last two wins. However, Bayern have looked shakier on their travels this season and will face a big test against this Dortmund side and manager Edin Terzic who has gotten the better of his counterpart on a number of occasions.
