The match

The first of 10 matchdays for Group I of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign kicks off with Belarus hosting Switzerland at the Karadorde Stadium in Novi Sad, Serbia. The Belarusian national team was mandated by UEFA to play their home matches at neutral venues due to their involvement in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. They take to the field here for the first time in 2023 following a pair of friendly matches that were played near the end of 2022. Belarus would earn a 1-0 away win over Syria in the first outing before falling 2-0 away to Oman in the second. Before those friendlies, Belarus had competed in the UEFA Nations League with the White Wings ultimately only mustering three points with no wins for a bottom-place finish. The result means that Belarus were relegated to League D of the next iteration of the tournaments.

Switzerland will be looking to respond after a humiliating exit in the 2022 World Cup round of 16. The Swiss suffered a 6-1 defeat on that day, their largest margin of defeat at the World Cup since losing 5-0 to West Germany in 1966. The previous result aside, there was a lot to be encouraged about with this Switzerland side. Manager Murat Yakin, who has been in charge since August of 2021, said prior to the World Cup that this is the most talented side that Switzerland has ever had. They topped their World Cup qualifying group with five wins and two draws and gave a good showing of themselves in a tough UEFA Nations League group where they faced off with Spain, Portugal and Czech Republic. With three wins and three defeats, the Swiss would secure their position in League A of the next iteration of the competition.

Key Statistics

  • Switzerland has won five of its previous seven competitive fixtures, including wins over Spain and Portugal during that stretch.
  • Switzerland has only failed to score once in its last seven competitive fixtures.
  • Belarus has managed only two clean sheets in its last eight fixtures.
  • Belarus has managed only one win in its last eight matches, losing four and drawing the remaining three.

The bet of our experts

Belarus manager Georgiy Kondratjev has not had the best of times during his current stint in charge. The 63-year-old has only presided over four wins in his 17 matches in charge, with another three draws and 10 losses since taking over in 2021. His team has only won once in the last eight matches, although the White Wings have managed to pick up three draws during that stretch. They’ll come up against a talented Swiss side that will be desperate to respond from the heavy World Cup loss to Portugal with a strong showing here. Expect the Swiss not to hold back in a match that they should be able to win by a multiple goal margin. Our Belarus vs Switzerland prediction: Switzerland -1 European handicap
