The UEFA Champions League returns after a two-week break with German giants Bayern Munich facing off against Czech champions Viktoria Plzen in Bavaria. The visitors are still looking for their first points in this competition after an unfortunate group draw which has already seen them face off against Barcelona and Inter in the first two matchdays. Viktoria unsurprisingly lost both matches, falling 5-1 away to Barca and 2-0 at home to Inter. Things won’t get any easier as they now face a daunting trip to the Allianz Arena to take on a Bayern side coming off a 4-0 demolition of Bayer Leverkusen. The result came just at the right time for the hosts as manager and player were under attack from the German media for their domestic slip-ups which saw them go on a four match winless run in the Bundesliga – the first time that has happened in over 20 years.
Despite the criticism they had received before emphatically ending their domestic winless run against Leverkusen, the Bavarian club had still been performing well in the Champions League. A 2-0 away win against Inter was followed up with a 2-0 home win over Barcelona, putting Bayern top of Group C with a three point lead as we approach the halfway mark in the group stage. The visiting Viktoria Plzen could be in trouble here. They will be facing a Bayern team with an extra day’s rest thanks to their Friday match as well as one that will be looking for another emphatic win to silence the media criticism. Viktoria Plzen have started their domestic season brilliantly as they look to defend their title and have gotten off to a 7-1-0 start. Unfortunately, the Bavarians pack too much of a punch for this to be anything other than a comprehensive home win.
We’re going to back the Bayern Munich team total of over 3.5 goals as our bet for this match. This means that the hosts will have to score at least four goals for our bet to be a winner. The 4-0 win against Leverkusen on Friday should act as a return to form for the Bavarians, who were struggling domestically before the result. They have been able to maintain a high level of play in the Champions League, which should continue here with another dominant win in front of the home fans.
