League leaders Palmeiras will be looking for a strong response after being bounced from the Brazilian Cup 1-0 against Sao Paulo in midweek. They face a packed fixture list which sees them hitting the road again to take on 11th place Avai at the Ressacada Stadium for matchday 14 of the Brasileirão Série A. Palmeiras are having an excellent season, with their 8-4-1 league record giving them a three point lead over second place Corinthians and an upcoming fixture against Cerro Porteno in the Copa Libertadores knockout stages on deck. The loss against Sao Paulo in the last outing snapped a 19 match unbeaten run in all competitions going back to the middle of April. Their opponents come into this match off the back of a 2-0 away loss to Fluminense which moves their season record to 5-2-6. Avai has looked a completely different team when playing on home soil this season and will be looking to improve upon their 4-1-1 record at the Ressacada.
This is a pretty terrible spot for Palmeiras situationally. O Verdão have a number of factors working against them that should give the hosts a lot of confidence that they can get a result here, despite the visitors 4-2-0 away record on the season. Avai will enjoy a significant rest advantage here, with the entire week to prep for this match while Palmeiras are coming in on short rest with only two full days to recover. Additionally, this is the visitors third straight away match and fourth match in the last 10 days. After playing a strong lineup against Sao Paulo in the midweek cup match, manager Abel Ferreira will have to consider some rotation to his squad in this match as the first leg of the all important Copa Libertadores knockout stage comes just three days after this one. All of these factors combined with Avai’s formidable home form means that the hosts should be able to at least keep this a competitive match.
