Euro debutants North Macedonia start their campaign in Bucharest against Austria who are making their third appearance at the tournament. These two teams make up Group C alongside Netherlands and Ukraine with those two teams expected to qualify for the knockout stages. One of these two sides may sneak through as a best-placed third so this game could have huge ramifications when the group stage is all said and done.
Austria warmed up for Euro 2020 with a 1-0 loss in England before drawing 0-0 at home to Slovakia last weekend. That leaves Austria with just one win from six games heading into the tournament and that victory came against the Faroe Islands who are ranked 113th by FIFA. Franco Foda’s side are without a win in three games and have failed to score in any of those three matches since their 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands back in March. Austria are the favourites heading into this game though and beat North Macedonia twice in 2019 during qualifying for this tournament.
North Macedonia enter the first major tournament as an independent nation hoping to upset the odds on their arrival. They defeated Georgia in the play-offs back in November of last year and they have won five of their last eight matches including three of their last four fixtures. Victory over 2014 World Cup champions Germany back in March gave us a good look at the minnows but they will be no pushovers and come into this opener off the back of a 4-0 win over Kazakhstan last Friday.
