After a draining and disappointing result against Wales, Australia (third, six points) will look to bounce back when they clash with Uruguay (fifth, four points) in a Pool ‘D’ Rugby World Cup fixture.
The Wallabies started their World Cup with a 39-21 win over Fiji, but fell to a very tight 29-25 loss to Wales in their second match. Both the games saw Australia start late and concede the lead in the first-half. The Wallabies were brilliant in the second-half against Wales and would be keen to continue the same stretch albeit from the start. Australia will look at this match as a chance to test their squad. There could be as many as 13 changes from the Wales game with Australia looking to add bigger bodies in the back row. They have played Uruguay only once before – in the 2015 World Cup when they absolutely annihilated them in a 65-3 win.
Uruguay were on cloud nine when they started the tournament with a 30-27 win over Fiji. It was as much a surprise for the Fijians, as is a shock in the tournament. The South Americans played passionately and deserved the win all through. However, their hopes of winning two World Cup games in a row were quashed by Georgia in a 33-7 loss. The challenge for this fixture against Australia will be to maintain their presence for three back-to-back tough games. They certainly have the side to push the Australians, but Uruguay will have play to their best game – what they did against Fiji, to have any chances.
Australia will be smarting after their loss to Wales. Their qualification hopes are still in their hands and the Wallabies will be targeting a win with bonus point.
