The match

Australia will look to get their World Cup campaign to a positive way when they take on Italy in Valenciennes. The Aussie Women have always made their mark on the international scene and that is evident in the consistency of their results. Having missed out on the first World Cup in 1999, they couldn’t make it out of the group stages for the next three. However, the last three World Cups have seen the Australians make it to the quarters. They haven’t lost in six competitive fixtures coming into the tournament, that included winning all three of their games in the FFA Cup of Nations in March. Defence remains a problem, nevertheless, considering the fact that Australia have conceded eight goals to the USA and the Netherlands in their last two warm-up friendlies. Italy, on the other hand, haven’t had much success in the World Cups and are making their appearance on the global stage after a gap of 20 years. They haven’t been impressive on the European scene either, and since losing in the 1997 Euros final, they haven’t made it to the final eight of the Euros from then on. However, they have been in impressive form coming into the World Cup, not losing in normal time over the last nine international fixtures.

Key Statistics

  • Australia are unbeaten in their last six competitive games.
  • Australia have seen over 2.5 match goals in six of their last seven matches.
  • Italy have seen over 2.5 match goals in six of their last seven matches.

The bet of our experts

This is surely going to be a high scoring affair, at least on the basis of recent scoring record of the matches involving the respective sides. Australia will start this game as favourites, considering they look stronger on paper and have more World Cup experience than Italy. The Italians haven’t failed to score in any of their last 15 matches and hence this game should see goals at both ends, at the minimum.
