The match

Pool D of the 2019 Rugby World Cup will witness Australia taking on their Oceania neighbors Fiji in what could be a straight forward clash. The Wallabies have not lost to Fiji in 65 years and have won five matches this century by a margin of 35 points or more. Furthermore, Australia have not lost the opening match of a World Cup since they lost to South Africa in the opening fixture of 1995 edition. Thankfully for Australia, their form in 2019 has been peaking at the right time. That includes a win over the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship. They have their weaknesses, but Australia should prove a handful for the Fijians, a side they have defeated by 16 points or more in six of their last seven meetings. Fiji, however, are one of those teams that are expected to trip the established nations. Their form has been impressive too, with Fiji coming to Tokyo on the back of three successive wins. Having said that, with a tough draw at hand – Georgia and Wales are also part of their pool – Fiji will have to be careful about their prospects.

Key Statistics

  • Australia haven’t lost to Fiji in 65 years, a run of 17 Tests (W16, D1), including five wins this century by a margin of 35 points.
  • Australia have not lost their opening match of a World Cup, since against South Africa in 1995.
  • Fiji have won three of their last eight matches against top nations, with wins against Scotland, Italy and France.

The bet of our experts

Australia are among the favourites for the tournament, although they have too many concerns to be a threat at the moment. However, they shouldn’t have too many concerns in brushing aside Fiji, a side they have easily swatted aside in the last 54 years. The raw power in the Fiji side makes this a good spectacle and Australia will be stretched. Just like they were pushed all the way in Cardiff (28-13) in the 2015 World Cup, Australia could be made to sweat in this fixture. It might go closer than what most people expect it to be, but Australia should come out with full points.
