The fans at the Wanda Metropolitano were a decisive factor in their sides exploits against Liverpool in the Champions League in midweek and now Villarreal are the visitors to this hostile atmosphere. Atletico have been stuttering in La Liga but they do still remain in the top four on 40 points while their visitors come here in 6th position, just two points behind and a win here for the ‘yellow submarine’ could see them overtake their opponents.
Atleti’s win in midweek well have given them a much-needed boost and despite a poor run of form in La Liga many fancied them to take the European champions at home and they did. Now many will be expecting them to beat Villarreal this weekend. Los Rojiblancos have just one win in their last five league games but at home they have won three of their last four in La Liga and five of their last six in all competitions at home. Atletico are a different team when they play at home and seven of their 10 league wins have come at this stadium. They have 40 points in the league and 25 of those have come here and only Barcelona have managed a victory here this season.
Villarreal have won three of their last four games in La Liga whilst drawing the other and they now find themselves in the European places. The visitors come here having won seven of their 10 matches in 2020 in all competitions. The Yellow Submarine were on a seven-game winning run on the road but have lost one and drawn one since.
Atleti’s home form of late has been patchy but they received a real confidence booster in midweek and won’t be letting up. Villarreal may struggle to find a way through and they have just one clean sheet in their last six games so I’m tipping a home win in this game.
