This season’s Champions League will feel like a bit of a sprint with the group phase being ran off in eight weeks. These teams began their continental campaign last Wednesday night with Diego Simeone’s Atletico team going down 4-0 to the holders Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Salzburg had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at home to Lokomotiv Moscow. Now, the Austrian club led by Jesse Marsch will travel to the Spanish capital with a chance of putting their hosts under increasing pressure.
Defeat for Atletico in this game could be detrimental to their chances of progressing to the last-16 despite it being just the second game. Atleti beat then holders Liverpool in the last-16 of this competition back in March before the current pandemic took over. Simeone’s side were then beaten by RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals as the Argentine manager exited the tournament, for the first time at the hands of a side not consisting of one Cristiano Ronaldo. Los Rojiblancos managed to shrug off their heavy defeat to Bayern with a 2-0 win at home to Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday evening.
Salzburg meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Lokomotiv Moscow despite entering the game as favourites. They bounced back at the weekend domestically with a fifth straight win in the Austrian Bundesliga but now they must start getting three points on the continent. However, a draw would perhaps be a solid point for the Austrians who managed just one victory in five away matches in Europe last season.
Diego Simeone's side have been back to their defensive best apart from that collapse against the European juggernaut which is Bayern Munich. Salzburg can cause Atleti problems but I don't think they can break them down enough to get all three points here so I'm tipping under 2,5 goals in this one.
