Atletico Madrid are doing their best to come out of the shadows of Barcelona and Real Madrid. They top La Liga and host Premier League side Chelsea in the first leg of this Champions League last sixteen tie. Atletico came second behind Bayern Munich in their Champions League group. They finished second behind Bayern Munich but trailed them by seven points. Only two of their games were won, both against Red Bull. A home draw was earned against Bayern but the Germans put out a weakend line-up as they had already qualified. Their form has dipped a little of late and on Saturday, they lost 2-0 at home to Levante. They have only one win in their last four league games and their lead at the top is down to three points (with a game in hand) over Real Madrid. Home form has been strong this season but their last two home league games have only produced a single point. In the Champions League, they haven't lost a home game since 2017 and it just happened to be Chelsea who beat them. Only one of their three home group games was won this season, two having under 2.5 goals scored in them.
Chelsea drew at Southampton on Saturday ending a run of five league and cup wins since the arrival of Thomas Turkel. They had to come from behind to get that point with the equalizer coming from the penalty spot. Chelsea haven't had the hardest of recent fixture lists but it's about to get a lot tougher. Two games against Atletico and matches against Manchester United and Liverpool will show how far Chelsea have come in recent weeks. They topped their Champions League group finishing a point ahead of Sevilla. So much for getting an advantage by winning your group, when you end up drawing the La Liga leaders. Chelsea have won all three of their away games in this season's Champions League but this is their toughest task. Only once in their last nine away games have they scored more than once. A bet on under 2.5 goals is the tip for this match.
