A cracking tie awaits as Atalanta and Real Madrid lock horns in Bergam for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. Both teams come into this one in fine form which should set up a fantastic game. Atalanta are currently 4th in Serie A after back-to-back wins while Real Madrid have closed the gap on their neighbours Atletico to just three points thanks to a run of four straight victories.
Atalanta were the surprise package in the Champions League during their debut season in the competition last year and had PSG on the ropes in their quarter-final matchup before conceding two late goals. Nonetheless, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have made their way back to the knockout stages after finishing second in Group D behind Liverpool with 11 points from their six matches. However, they didn’t manage to win any of their games at home during that phase but have won eight of their 11 matches when hosting since their final home group game back in October.
Real Madrid have enjoyed a fine February with four consecutive wins and the most recent of which came at the weekend as they made the trip to Real Valladolid and left with all three points in a 1-0 win. Madrid topped Group B to advance to the last-16 thanks to three wins from their last four matches. Their fate in the knockout stages looked in doubt but a significant win in Milan over Inter helped them on their way. Away from home, Zinedine Zidane’s side have won each of their last three games and a good result here could send Madrid on their way to the quarter-finals and have the manager dreaming of a fourth success in this competition with the club.
