Atalanta continued their rich vein of form with a 4-1 win over Benevento at the weekend to maintain their position of 5th in Serie A. Cagliari meanwhile, suffered their fourth league defeat in succession and remain 16th just two points above the relegation zone. Luckily, they have enjoyed a fine cup run but something tells me Atalanta are about end their journey.
Atalanta are now unbeaten in nine games and have lost just one of their last 13 matches in all competitions. The Bergamo outfit have won four of their last five games scoring four or more goals in three of those games and have racked up 20 goals across their last seven matches whilst conceding just six. Atalanta were beaten in the Coppa Italia final in 2019 but were knocked out at this stage last season.
The home side bow into the competition at the round of 16 stage whereas Cagliari have already had to battle through two rounds. Cagliari defeated Cremonese of Serie B, 1-0 in the second round before getting past the impressive Verona 2-1 back in November. However, the Islanders haven’t won a game since. The visitors have lost five of their last nine matches including each of their last four and they have just one win in 15 on the road in all competitions.
