Arsenal welcome Leeds United in the Round of 16 of the EFL Cup at the Emirates Stadium. The hosts went past West Bromwich Albion and Wimbledon in the second and third rounds to set up the clash with Leeds United in the fourth round of matches. Leeds United beat Crewe Alexandra and Fulham on their way to the Arsenal clash in the fourth round. Despite a very similar run in form in the EFL Cup, the two teams have had a very different domestic season so far. Arsenal come into the game on the back of a seven-match unbeaten run with a five-match unbeaten run at home as well. They have regained some sort of team form after a rather dismal start to the season, and hence have kept four clean sheets in their last seven matches across all competitions. Mikel Arteta’s side have shown a knack for cup competitions and they will be hoping to go all the way in this season’s EFL Cup.
Leeds United, however, have been the shadow of the side which finished in the upper half of the table in the Premier League. They are around the relegation zone in the Premier League and have been highly inconsistent with their results. They are on a four-game winless run in away matches. Marcelo Bielsa’s men have not gone past the second round in the EFL Cup in the last four seasons and are in uncharted territories as far as their recent cup run is concerned. It is also to be noted that Leed United are winless in their last nine head to head matches against Arsenal and have a lot of ground to cover in order to overcome the Gunners.
EFL Cup comes as a tool of redemption for Leeds United but going by the overall form of the side, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to prevail against Arsenal. The hosts have found their newfound consistency and are picking up regular three points despite an initial poor start to the season. Arsenal have also performed relatively well in the past few cup tournaments. We are backing Arsenal to lead at halftime and full time in this game.
