After their hopes of making the quarter-final of the Rugby World Cup are dashed, Argentina (third, six points) will look for a consolation win when they face United States of America (fifth, zero points).
The Pumas had an inauspicious start to their campaign, as they went down 23-21 to France in their tournament opener. That was a big blow to their ambitions, even as Argentina recovered to defeat Tonga 28-12. However, their quarter-final hopes hinged on their match against eternal rivals England – a game that they went on to lose 39-10. An early red card for Tomas Lavanini for a shoulder to the head of England’s Owen Farrell was the game-changer for Argentina. With the tournament now done and dusted, head coach Mario Ledesma has decided to ring in the changes with an eye on future. There will be nine changes for this match, even as veteran Juan Manuel Leguizamon is slated to make his first start of the tournament.
USA were not expected to be in the reckoning for top-two and their performances so far have lived up to those ‘expectations’. The 45-7 loss to England was a masterclass from the English on how to play tactical games. USA were in the game for the initial ten minutes of play, but were soon muscled away. There was hope for USA against France, but the French avoided a major embarrassment and an upset by recovering in the final quarter. Although the 33-9 scoreline doesn’t do justice to how well USA have pushed France, it was a loss nevertheless.
United States know that their chances of picking up a win are higher against Tonga – their opponent for the last match of the tournament. Argentina will target full points in their quest to finish on a high. Expect the Pumas to pick up a handsome win.
