The final match in Group 2B of the UEFA Nations League sees Albania hosting Iceland at the Air Albania Stadium in Tirana. With Russia already disqualified and relegated to League C as the bottom place team and Israel already having the group locked up with a five point lead, the two sides today are only playing for pride and a second-place group finish. Iceland has drawn all three of their group stage matches but did manage to grab a 1-0 friendly win over Venezuela in their last outing. Albania has only managed a point in this tournament and their 0-1-2 record puts them two points behind second-place Iceland. The two nations drew 1-1 in their first meeting in what was ultimately a very even match deserving of a sharing of the spoils.
These two teams are very close in FIFA’s national team rankings with Albania coming in at 66th while Iceland sit at 63rd. Another tight encounter is likely to be on the cards here but it’s the visiting Iceland that come into the match with the better momentum. Strákarnir okkar has pushed their unbeaten run to five matches with a pair of friendly wins in between the three group stage draws. Iceland has proven themselves to be a tough team to beat for seemingly over a decade as they have consistently managed to overachieve from a nation with less than 400,000 people. It’s been seven matches since Albania last tasted victory with their last win coming against Moldova back in November of 2021. They’ll hope to end the group stages on a positive note but have lacked the offensive firepower to close out games.
