Ajax will wrap up their matches in Group C of the UEFA Champions League with a home match against Sporting Lisbon. Going to the game, both teams have already secured places in the knockout stage. Ajax top the group with 15 points and Sporting have nine, in second place. There are three teams so far on a perfect run in the group stages, and Ajax is one of them. They have the joint leading scorer in the competition and have one of the best defences. Sebastian Haller has scored in each of Ajax’s five Champions League matches and he goes to this game with nine goals in the competition. The Dutch giants are coming from a 5-0 win over Willem II in the Eredivisie and have four clean sheets in the last five. At home, Ajax haven’t conceded a goal in the last four matches and they have clean sheets in their two matches in the Champions League this season as well.
Sporting will go to this game on a high, after their 3-1 win over Benfica in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. They suffered a 5-1 home loss to Ajax in their first meeting in this group and they will be keen to avoid a repeat. There’s no pressure though, as they have their second round ticket already and a run of 12 straight wins should be good enough to push them. They have managed just two clan sheets in their last five matches but scored two or more in each of the five. Sporting were slow starters in the Champions League, losing the opening two games – to Ajax at home and away to Borussia Dortmund. They however recovered, and head to this game with three straight wins in the competition, but they have just one clean sheet in the five matches played.
These two sides face off on the back of high scoring games and we have reason to expect another such outcome here. They both have in-form forwards but the key highlight will be Ajax’s Sebastian Haller, who has scored in all their Champions League matches. In his current form, we can back him to score again here.
