Familiar foes AC Milan and Napoli will prepare to do battle when the two Italian clubs meet in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash on Wednesday evening at the San Siro. In the previous round, Milan managed to hold on to a one-goal lead from the first leg to overcome Tottenham Hotspur. Since then, though, Milan’s form has been far from impressive, managing just one win in their last six matches in all competitions, along with three draws and two losses. However, it is worth noting that the one win they managed came over this opponent less than two weeks ago by a massive 4-0 scoreline. Milan have been good at home in this competition, losing just once in their four matches at the San Siro. Their major strength has been their defense, where they’ve managed to keep four consecutive clean sheets, last conceding to Chelsea in the group stages. Despite the huge 22-point deficit between themselves and their opponent in the domestic league, AC Milan will take huge confidence from that win earlier this month and will fancy their chances of doing it again and upsetting one of the tournament favourites in this one.
As for Napoli, there’s little to falter them on this season, and they will definitely be eyeing up a Champions League title to top off what has been one of their most impressive seasons in recent history. Napoli looks destined to lift the Serie A title this year, having opened a whopping 16-point lead over their closest challengers Lazio, with just nine matches left in the regular season. Napoli were too good for Eintracht Frankfurt in the previous round and ran away as 5-0 winners on aggregate over the two legs. Their away record is equally impressive, and they come into this match riding an eight-match winning streak in all competitions, dating back to the first week in January. Despite their excellent record this year, Napoli will be fully aware of the ability of their opponents, who handed them their biggest defeat of the season less than two weeks ago. It wouldn’t be surprising if Napoli starts the more defensive of the two in the early stages and aim to keep it scoreless for as long as possible before trying to nick a goal or two late on.
A couple of weeks ago, Napoli would have been heavily fancied on most bookmakers’ odds to come out as the winners of this match, but following their 4-0 defeat to this opposition, there’s almost nothing to split the sides now with both returning in the region of 2.7 to win. However, one result should not undo the good work Napoli has done this season, and their away record still looks very impressive, with 8 consecutive wins on the road. We fancy the visitors in this one but opt for the slightly less risky option of our money-back in the event of a draw at still very attractive odds of 1.8 and better.
