Liga Portugal Prediction 2023/24

Liga Portugal prediction

The Liga Portugal Betclic (formerly referred to as Liga NOS) is the top-flight professional league in Portuguese football which sees 18 teams competing for the championship. Due to its fall from sixth to seventh-place in the UEFA coefficient rankings, only the top four teams at the end season now earn a spot in one of the European competitions.

The team that wins the league title qualifies directly for the Champions League group stages while the runners-up enter the competition’s qualifying stages in the third round. A third-place finish earns a team entry into the Europa League second qualifying round and fourth-place grants a spot in the Europa Conference League, second qualifying round. Further down the table, the bottom two teams are relegated to the Portuguese second division. The side that finishes 16th has a chance at survival as they will compete with the second division’s third-place team in the relegation playoff.

There are three clubs that dominate the attention and the headlines in the Liga Portugal: FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon and SL Benfica. Unquestionably the most successful teams in the country, these three clubs have astoundingly won a combined 87 of the 89 all-time league championships. This should give you a sense of how top-heavy this league is as it is almost always a three-horse race for the trophy. Benfica lead the all-time list with a record 38 league titles, ahead of Porto in second (30 titles) and Sporting in third (19 titles). Braga will be looking to challenge the established order and their third-place finish last season suggest that they might have a surprise or two up their sleeve for this campaign.

2023/24 should see another fierce battle for the title of Portuguese champions. Players like Mehdi Taremi, João Mario and Pedro Goncalves will be leading their teams in search of silverware which should make for a fascinating league season. Which team will pay out their Liga Portugal odds for the league title? Benfica were highly impressive last season both in domestic competition and in their European endeavors. The Eagles lifted a record 38th league title while also putting together a scintillating run to the Champions League quarter-finals. Despite losing their prized young striker Goncalo Ramos to French giants PSG, Benfica were able to strengthen with the additions of Cabral from Fiorentina, Kokcu from Feyenoord and free agent Angel Di Maria. In addition to keeping a hold of many of their key players from last year's run, they also have arguably the best manager in the league in the forward-thinking Roger Schmidt. They'll undoubtedly be pushed by rivals Porto and Sporting but all signs are pointing towards a title defense in the red side of Lisbon.

    2022/23 Season Recap

Winner: SL Benfica won the league title last season with Porto finishing two points behind and Braga coming in third.

European qualification: Benfica, Porto and Braga qualified for the Champions League. Sporting's fourth-place finish qualified them for the Europa League while Arouca and Vitoria de Guimaraes made the Conference League qualifying rounds.

Relegation: Paços de Ferreira and Santa Clara were demoted to the second division. 16th-place Maritimo lost in the relegation playoff to Estrela da Amadora and were subsequently relegated.

Promoted to Liga Portugal: Moreirense and Farense finished first and second, respectively, in the Segunda Division and thus won automatic promotion. The aforementioned Estrela da Amadora also made the move up after emerging victorious in the playoff.
