Gold Cup 2017

Organised every four years, the Gold Cup is the international competition dedicated to teams in the Concacaf zone (North America, Central America and the Caribbean). Winning in 2015 by Mexico, which gave them the right to participate in the Russian Confederations Cup this year, they see strong opposing nations like Mexico, Costa Rica and the United States. Organised this year at the Yankees, it should bring its share of surprises.

The format of the competition

The format of the Gold Cup is simple. Twelve teams are divided into three groups of four. At the end of the first phase, the first two of each group are qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament, the same for the top two thirds. Naturally that follows the semi then the final, played this year on July 27 at the lawn of Levi's Stadium of Santa Clara.

This year again, three teams seem to be well ahead of the pack. The United States first, whose odds for a final victory is 1.7, should ensure the show on their lands. Equipped with world-renowned talents such as Bradley, Altidore, Howard and of course the Dortmund Pulisic nugget, Team USA should have no trouble getting out of its hen made up of Martinique, Panama and Nicaragua. Steeve Elana, Frédéric Piquionne and Julien Faubert are cited as potential "recruits" for the occasion!

The second expected nation will of course be Mexico. Even if we have to wait for the final list of the men who will be present - the selection already playing the Confederations Cup in Russia a few weeks ago - it is a safe bet that there will be a great squad. Faced with teams like Curacao, El Salvador and Jamaica, there are no obstacles on the road to the quarter-finals. The odds for a Mexico victory is also offered at 1.25 at Bet365.

Finally, we will of course have an eye on Costa Rica. Currently in second place in the zone for qualifying at the next World Cup 2018, Ramírez's men are in shape and expect to show it in American lands. With talents like Keylor Navas, Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz, it's a good bet that the other teams in the pool (Canada, Honduras, French Guiana) will not be weighted for a long time. The final victory of the Costa Ricans in this Gold Cup 2017 is offered at the nice odds of 6.00.

The outsiders

Outsiders, there are two that come to mind, Honduras (20.00) and Canada (33.00). With players accustomed to the high level (Liga, Greece, Mexico, Scotland, MLS), the Hondurans promise not to let go in every encounter they will compete. If they are in a big day attention therefore, their tenacity and the defensive rigor that characterises them could well weaken. The same holds true for Canadians. Progressing more and more over the years, notably thanks to the evolution of the Canadian teams in MLS, the men of the Far North will be to follow in this edition of the Gold Cup. They can count on their fans' unwavering support, and this may well create differences.
