2015’s competition saw Australia win their fifth World Cup title after beating their neighbours New Zealand in the final in Melbourne. This was the second tournament in a row that the home team were crowned winners, as India triumphed in Mumbai in the 2011 final - can England continue this trend in 2019? After beating Pakistan in the Quarter Finals and India in the Semi’s, the Aussies went on to win by 7 wickets to take home the trophy in the 11th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN THIS TIME?

The 2019 edition of the Cricket World Cup will follow a different format to previous years, with only 10 nations taking part in the tournament. 10 of the world’s 12 test-playing nations have qualified for the tournament, as opposed to the 14 countries that participated in 2015 and 2011, and achieved qualification in the following ways:

  • England - hosts
  • Australia, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka - qualified from ICC ODI Championship
  • Afghanistan, West Indies - qualified from 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier

The format of the tournament has also changed to match the decrease in participating nations - the group stage will be held in Round Robin format, which the 10 qualified nations composing a single group. Each team will play 9 matches in the group phase, which will be held in 11 venues across 10 cities in England and Wales from May 30th to June 6th.

The four teams that finish at the top of the group at the end of this phase will qualify for the knockout stage of the competition, which will be held as follows:

Semi Finals

  • Qualifier 1 vs Qualifier 4 @ Old Trafford on July 9th
  • Qualifier 2 vs Qualifier 3 @ Edgbaston on July 11th

Final

  • July 14th @ Lord’s Cricket Ground, London
